Choosing subjects and possible careers are important decision and choices. Students need to be developing an idea about what careers they may wish to follow. All students at Fiordland College have the opportunity to participate in a range of career education activities, which include events such as a whole school careers expo, 2-day to 1-week career development programmes, visits to SIT and Polytechnic, attendance at the Invercargill Career Fest, Otago University visit or participation in the Turning Point Bridge Programme. Careers education is integrated throughout all subjects in the school.
Increasing emphasis is placed upon transferable skills – skills such as communication, innovation, critical analysis and problem-solving – as well as sound academic skills that ensure good qualifications. Activities and interests developed outside the classroom will also be important in determining career pathways.
